Kawakubo did not participate in any internships or apprenticeships.

She did not have any mentors nor has she had inspiration from others.

Kawakubo entered the fashion industry when she began working in a textiles factory after graduation.

Employment

She eventually went on to form her own company from scratch called "Comme des Garçons" in 1973.

Kawakubo herself has said "'My approach is simple. It is nothing other than what I am thinking at the time I make each piece of clothing, whether I think it is strong and

beautiful. The result is something that other people decide.'"

Kawakubo has become a fashion icon due to her unique "anti-fashion" designs that are truly still considered fashion by the industry.

She has received numerous awards, but one that stands out was a "lifetime achievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America" earned in 2012.
