After reading the first three chapters of Nabokov's 'Transparent Things' i answered these three questions.

Why does looking at an object bring back memories?

an object brings back memories when you look at it because it captures a certain time in one physical item.

when memory is jogged because of an object it is called a distributed cognition which is, in a simple form, the environment around us that helps us think for example when you see childhood friends it reminds you and jogs childhood memories. there have been. Many different scientific studies have been carried out during the decades about different objects and how everyday items, as well as family heirlooms, can cue a memory jog or different emotions depending on the sentimentality of the person.

What does Nabokov mean by ‘surface focus’?

Surface focus is when you are looking at an object in that one moment in time. it is like a freeze frame with no history or emotional ties to it just happens to be there at that specific time.

Do objects contain a story?

Many objects do encapsulate a story where they two beginnings one from the design and manufacturing and the second when the first owner acquires the object and subsequently to how they are used.
