Answering the Question: Please explain your pathway preferences and tell us how you chose the order of first, second and third preference pathways in the Pathway Preference Form.

As the course has progressed I have realised that my strengths lie in storytelling. Whether it was through the outcome, or through the photographic styling of an outcome that didn't come out the way I intended it to, I get my story across. This is why I want to get into communication. Fashion communication is the most visually strong pathway, comprising of elements of all pathways, fashion, photography, graphic design, curation, set design, fine art, etc., which is why I chose it as my first preference. Fashion Communication for the digital age is what inspires me, it opens numerous opportunities to connect with people through media, with many interpretation possibilities. Fashion, as a channel for communication – clothing, hairstyles, postures, ways of walking, etc. – has its own grammar and vocabulary, just like spoken languages. However, Considering the power of image in fashion, it comes down to being a visual language, which is essentially storytelling through the media. Therefore, my main reasoning for why I think FC is most suitable for me is that I recognise where my strengths lie and that’s within selling and curating an idea, through creative direction, and especially through fashion.

I want to meet the challenges that the FC pathway has to offer and work with my classmates to project the storylines that are created, so that they make sense to anyone who’s viewing them. I enjoy digital communication, through image and film making, of people especially, the most, but that’s also because I haven’t had much exposure to the other elements of FC. I hope to explore all possibilities and gain learnings through new opportunities.

What truly builds a good story, is a strong narrative. Which is how I see Graphic communication. It is a commentary on the world we live in with a reliable visual narrator. GC takes words and combines them with visual communicators to create its final outcome, telling the story of the person behind it. Similar to FC it has a large spectrum to experiment within, and learn from. This is why it is my second choice. The only reason I didn’t put it first was that I believe GC has a few more limitations when it comes to the creation of the visual communicator in the first place. I enjoy the entire process leading up to the final outcome, as opposed to the curating of the final elements into the final outcome.
