Pollution control and difficulties

In 2003, the authorities decide to relocate the tanneries to the suburbs of Savar, which is further to the capital city Dhaka, and over 150 factory owners agreed. However, because of the disputes on the cost of relocation, the active end with nothing is defined.

In 2012, the Human Rights Watch (HRW) found the government did not try to control pollution. Richard Pearshouse, the senior Researcher from HRW, claims Hazaribagh is a free zone for law enforcement, and the government has not monitored and inspection the factories in his book Toxic tanneries: the health repercussions of Bangladesh's Hazaribagh leather.

Nowadays, the EU and American market share of Bengal leather is dramatically reduced because only 3 tanneries obtain the LWG certification, a necessary condition for export leather products to western countries. To improve the environmental problem, the government charges a high tariff on leather products, which causes the leather shoe business to record a negative growth rate of 9.28% and a mere 159.23 million dollars in profit.
