"Just as letters can be written in ink, words can be spun out with thread. To spread my messages to people, I use thread as if I’m writing phrases. It means a lot to me to knit holes into my works. These holes create structured surfaces that air can pass through. No matter how strong the force may be, the holes receive and respond to the air because of their inherent flexibility."

I love how Noda describes her practise here, It's as though her work is like poetry. This is something I would like to also incorporate into my own work, as I would like to tell a story and for my work to have a clear narrative.

I also like how organic her work looks. I would also like to create something that looks more organic for this project.

Sheila Hicks

I really love this work from Sheila hicks as it reminds me of the method I used to make pom pom's, which is one that my granny taught me when I was younger. It made me feel very nostalgic as the colours also remind me of my granny. I think perhaps I will use her as inspiration for this project as she was the one that taught me a lot of textile making processes such as knitting, sewing, and beading.

From this I become interested in using my granny as my main inspiration for my two day project. she introduced me to both textile processes and poetry, which seem to link quite closely according to Suzumi Noda. This led me to also find a poem to use as inspiration for this project, and I chose one of her favourite poems by Christina Rosetti:

Color

This poem is all about colour, which reminds me very much of my grandma's style and furnishings. However more interestingly, attached to the poem online there was a video created by the poetry foundation called "Word Weaving". Strangely enough this video created for children took me back full circle to Noda's words and pointed out the links between poetry and weaving, using this poem. In the video, The person guides an activity to write your own poem inspired by "colour" and then using this poem cut into strip as material to weave. She also creates a loom from cardboard which is something I would like to try for this project.
