Staging Concept

I began by considering the aesthetic I wanted the live performance to have.

I processed my ideas for this project in an unconventional way, beginning with the overall aesthetic before considering how this may be translated through music and performance. The song actually came in relation to my staging ideas rather than the music informing the staging.

I knew I wanted an etherial aesthetic with lots of white and metallics. Similar to the white marble statues of the renaissance period. I began to look at these statues and how the stone masons would carve something so solid to look like it was fluid. I particularly loved the statues of veiled characters where the person looked enveloped/trapped.

I considered how this could be translated to a live performance using fabric or plastic to engulf the performer, creating a sense of struggle/being held back and how the character may be able to break free from this restriction to reveal their true self.

I considered having a huge piece of fabric that covered the stage and was weighted at the edges. Under the fabric my dancers would begin lay completely flat and I would be on top of the fabric centre stage. The dancers would then begin to rise and fall from under the fabric creating a form that moved around me like a cloud.

This was a nice idea, but felt like it would really be engaging for part of the performance. I wanted to encapsulate the idea of shedding layers.

By this point I had decided that the concept of my song was going to be about the realisation that whilst there is a social pressure to find yourself and know exactly who you are, this standard is unobtainable as we are all fluid beings with the capacity to constantly re-generate and shed what no longer serves our growth.
