Reflecting on Co-Lab 2

Co-Lab 2 was a real challenge for me. The emphasis was on collaboration in this project and I didn't feel I had the best opportunity to collaborate due to a combination of factors that impacted the other members of my group's ability to contribute.

Communication from other group members was poor, which meant that as I was the only person contributing, I had to push forward ideas myself and just hope that that someone else would be able to add something in order to create an outcome.

It was disappointing to have to work in this way, especially after seeing how successful some of the other groups collaborations were, however it did give me the opportunity to explore how I can apply my writing skills to performance tasks.

I had never considered sharing my poetry/spoken word in through voiceover so it was exciting to explore how I can bring my poetry to life and combine it with my interests in sound/music design.

I got good feedback from my peers and the tutors leading the project, who credited how I had persevered with the project despite not getting the full Co-Lab experience. They enjoyed how I combined my voiceover with sound effects to create an almost meditative soundtrack.

It was interesting to work in a more 'fine art' context, responding to stimulus to quickly generate work. This process would have been a lot easier with equal contribution from other group members to share the workload and oush forward ideas, but whilst the work I managed to produced doesn't feel particularly ground breaking for me, I am proud of the outcomes.

The style I began to explore in these projects has inspired me to continue to write more poetry/spoken word, without the pressure of feeling that my lyricism has to be turned into music. I want to explore more ways of combining my voiceovers with other elements to create sound performances.

I'm excited to explore how these can be scaled up from listening alone in your bedroom with headphones, to a more immersive sound experience, or accompany live performance or film.
