Shirley Cards

In our Histories in Context sessions we discussed Kodak's practise of using Shirley Cards to help with the calibration of cameras. The model used for the Shirley Card was always a white woman resulting in unpredictable results when shooting people of colour.

This series of images aim to "reverse the bias" and celebrate the normality of darker skin. I draw influence from Broomberg & Chanarin who used old film to capture images of black people in South Africa to highlight the bias built into camera technologies of the time.
