Pre-Utopians // The Tundra

A new generation of designers emerges under the conditions of late capitalism. More and more, they find themselves stuck in limbo. An existential dread for their futures looms at every moment of their days. Simultaneously, a raw childlike yearning to continue making and crafting will always exist deep within. On one hand these individuals just want to create without a care in the world. On the other, there is a paralysing fear of putting things into the universe that don't seem to serve a purpose. This conflict is expressed through overwhelming leaden volumes set against delicately crocheted pastels and cool, fluid drapes.

These individuals know that there is something more out there. They know that there must be a way to create not for the present, but for our futures post-capitalism. This glimmer of hope is what sustains their being. They may not care about having all of the answers, but they will always be searching for new questions. These are the Pre-Utopians.

The world in which they exist presently is called the Tundra. The Tundra does not exist physically, but more so as a state of mind. Almost like a freeze in time.

The tundra exists without any trace of anthropocene. This could be seen as negligent, but this separation from our reality allows ideas to be generated that can later be contextualised as real world solutions. This allows Pre-Utopians to consider futures and solutions that are not reactionary, something humans only existing in our present fail to do. The Tundra allows the imagination to run free from the grips of capitalism.
