Build it - Kikar Hamedina Proposal

For my Build it project, I chose a square in Tel-aviv called Kikar Hamedina as it is the biggest square in Israel, with the most luxurious shops of Tel-Aviv, and yet its an empty square with little vegetation. I wanted to give a proposal to to make it more welcoming, and give it the merits it deserved. My project is to create an interactive space, enabling people to sit, relax, socialize or simply cross the square under a shaded and airy area. The targeted users are people living in the neighborhood, from all ages, and people working there. I intend my project to interact with people, and families living in the neighborhood as well as people going shopping or working there.

Israel is a very hot country and the entire square is under the sun, so my first concern was to create a shaded area. I inspired myself from micharabieh, and designed different columns with different shapes of roofs. Put together, this gave an impression of having a micharabieh with the ground. The columns, roofs, and furniture would be made out of reinforced concrete and painted with building lime: the roofs remain white to reflect most of the sunlight and absorbs a small heat quantity. The columns and furniture will be painted in light colors to bring some color to the space, and to have light colors absorb less heat quantity as the darker the color, the more heat is absorbed.

The space remains open, allowing for good air circulation. There are spots in the shadow and some other under the sun, enabling everyone to be happy. Some chairs, sunbeds and little tables are put at t the bottom of the columns, giving places to sit and to relax to the people there.
