Contextual Practice Diagnostic – Week 7 Diagnosis Attributes Reflection, 04.12.20

In our discussion, we spoke about how each of these attributes relates to the different curriculum areas and even pathways.

2D vs 3D vs 4D - We agreed that Fine Art in the sense of painting and working with different media on paper could under 2D. GCD as well because of digital-based design development many a times. GCD could also be 4D in terms of projections. Sameen said that textiles could come under 2D because of patterns but as a whole, I think Fashion and Textiles would be more applicable to 3D based work considering the garments, fabrics and movement, and even 4D in terms of the workshop we did by projecting our images onto the wall. Areas like architecture, sculpture and JFFA would come under the 3D as well because of working with actual physical objects in the creative process. Fine Art in terms of 4D, VRX, etc, would be under 4D.

Problem solver vs Problem creator - Problem solving could relate to the 3D aspect of art such as architecture, sculpture and product design because of how we work structurally and sculpturally, understanding the briefs and considering a number of aspects related to the public including materials, location, etc. I stated that Graphic Design could be about problem creating but I definitely agree with Ziqi, who said that it is about problem solving. It’s about how you understand the briefs, solve problems and communicate and address social and political information, showcasing these ideas to the public. Fine Art could be about problem creating because of use of different media like collage, erasure and exploring different aspects of movement in 4D, in terms of trial and error.

Think to Make vs Make to Think - Fashion & Textiles and Graphic Design could come under 'think to make’ because fashion is related to first-hand experiences and primary research and Graphic Design in the sense of providing the public with information and addressing important topics. 3DDA could also come under this because of a number of aspects one has to consider before execution. ‘Make to think’ could relate to Fine Art in the sense of 4D because of how experimental it is, no planning needed. I agree with Ziqi who said JFFA could be under 'make to think' basing it off of the fact that the workshop was very experimental, exploring unique forms of wearability.

Work alone vs Work collectively - I agree with Sameen and Ziqi, both, who said that all areas can be explored alone. As a home study student, we say this from experience. But to categorise in general, I think GCD could be done alone because it could be based on an individual’s idea. The same goes for Fashion and Textiles. Fine Art: 4D could be collaborative in the sense of a number of aspects in it like photography and time-based media and exploration of motion/movement. 3DDA could be done alone in the sense of idea or message but collectively in the sense of scale, location and execution.

Simplicity vs Complexity - Simplicity could be applicable for GCD because of wide use of minimal approaches and written/aural language. Fashion & Textiles could be a mix of both, depending on the garments. Fine Art in the sense of sculpture and 4D and 3DDA in the sense of architecture could be under complexity because of materials, scale, motion and public's needs. I agree with my peers who said that every area can be simple if one wants it to be.

Expression vs Restraint - We agreed that all four areas could be expressive because all fields have the ability to speak through different ways and media. Restraint would relate to solving problems with simplicity. This could be done via painting, photography or even graphic design.

Multi Platform vs Specialist - I think this is more related to how one is a person and one’s career path but to generalise, Fashion and Textiles would come under 'specialist' because it’s somewhat interrelated and limited to many fields under fashion itself. Multi Platform could be Fine Art, 3DDA and GCD because of the number of completely different pathways varying from painting to 4D, architecture to footwear and illustration to fashion communication with just a few aspects in common.

Thinking through Drawing vs Thinking through Making vs Thinking through a Lens - Thinking through drawing is the most applicable for Fine Art like painting because of how one experiments in their sketchbook. I agree with Ziqi, illustration is also a lot about thinking through drawing. Fashion as well because of how it’s based on personal experiences and observational drawings. Thinking through making would suggest sculpture and architecture, like Sameen said because of 3D based media. Thinking through a lens relates to photography and moving image and illustration as well.

Concept-based vs Process-based - 3DDA and Fashion is about the process, experimentation and design development. I said that GCD could be a mix of both and my peers said that it’s more about the process. I disagree with them on this because I think it is more about the conceptual basis of it than the process because of what you want to express through your message. Fine Art: 4D and painting, could be both: conceptual because of what one wants to communicate and processual because the final outcome depends a lot on the process of making.

Personal vs Public - Fashion and Fine Art could come under 'personal', being about the artist/designer, because it has more of an emotional value to it and the creative process is inspired by observation. Though, I think Fine Art could even be a mix of both depending on the artist. I agree with both my peers who said that 3DDA and GCD would be public-based because of how it communicates to the public and provides them with information, taking their needs into account. It’s more about the public than the artist or designer themselves.

Interpreter vs Author - Interpreting could be an aspect of 3DDA and GCD because of addressing social and political issues. These would relate more to the public and their viewpoints. Fine Art could be a mix of both because sometimes one is communicating some societal information but sometimes it could be totally about one's self and one's individual idea. Fashion could relate to an author because of conveying a message through your own language.

Empathise vs Antagonise - Graphic Design and 3DDA would be about empathising because of taking the public and their demands into account with relation to advertising and selling. I agree with one of my peers who said that it’s about expressing our views while making them understandable to the audience. On the other hand, Fine Art and Fashion is more about about the artist or designer themselves.
