1) What pathway workshop the work is from?

Fashion Design - Your Surroundings

2) What is work's function? Please explain & be specific does it address a practical or decorative need or convey a message or emotion… perhaps it does more than one thing if so, what else does it do?

This work was a product and result of my research on my surroundings and my teammates research on their surroundings. Most of the shapes we have selected come from the Archway neighborhoods observations. Throughout our work we have tried producing interesting volumes, shapes and creative with the cutout shapes from our drawings. In general our intentions were to create creative volumes, abstract and shapes on the body in order to reflect the archway neighborhood, it’s mood and how we feel in it. I feel like we quite successful, with a contrast of curved, clean and structure that reflect the emptiness of Archway during this pandemic, and a feeling of nostalgic and almost loneliness contrasted with some abundant lines and repetition of shapes that seem to reflect and contrast with this other side of Archway, being way more active, messy and lively (traffic, little shops, the King of Kebab, sellers talking and screaming in the streets). All those shapes we have created came from structures, shape and architecture within Archway and really reflected the (might we say) personality of the neighborhood. I feel like in the extension of my work where I have created a small collection based on those same shapes I have explored similar paths but I also have explored something that really inspired me in archway, and it was the creativity and diversity that comes from the art students that you see all over the place.

3) Describe the process of developing the work. Were there stages you were instructed to go through? What kind of restrictions, if any, were incorporated into the workshop? for example were you asked to only use certain materials or processes? Did you feel that this process helped with the development and making of the work and why?

First, we had to research and observe our neighborhood, and draw structures, shapes and connections that inspired us. Based on this multitude of drawings we had to select with those drawings shapes that inspire us. We had to scale those shapes up and create a “shape menu” then we had to scale them up on a1 paper and first make a small abstract structure to put on the body, then a second Medium structure (using three shapes from the shape menu) and finally in group of 3, create a large structure joining our big cutout shapes all together and again place it on the body. I feel like this process was really interesting and a new way to generate creative ideas. It created efficient, powerful works that reflect our ideas, even in the abstract... This process helped me see shapes and structure differently and see how 2D shapes and designs are developed into 3D volumes and structure. Throughout the day we also had to document our 3D structures though drawing, especially fast drawings and one line drawings, as well as mixing mediums. I really loved learning and developing those drawing techniques because it helped me really capture the essence of our 3 D shapes and see volumes, structure, etc.. more efficiently and to see them with my vision more accurately and really capture its intention and essence. After this day in studio, I decided to develop my work and continue explore this theme by using tracing paper in order to associate our shapes together in order to create more structures on the body. I tried to take the most interesting shapes and from that create a small collection that reflect our intentions.

4) How do you gauge the success of this work? What are the criteria you feel are important markers of success with work in this pathway?

I feel like to be successful in our work we have to be successful in the perception and manipulation of shape, volume, creating structure in the body creatively and also be able to create abstract shapes that have an intention and meaning behind to back up your work and create a interesting, creative and informed structure on the body. I feel like there is a need for a good manipulation of shapes and volume and construction and a good eye to create interesting shapes. You need a good sense of the material, how to manipulate it and know how to generate creative ideas from different ways and fast.

5) What was it about the workshop that you feel suits your creative personality?

I feel like it really suits my creative personality as I love designing and generating creative ideas but I also love developing 3D structures for the body, playing with the material (might it be textiles as we did in Fashion com or with paper like we did in the Fashion workshop) I feel like I would thrive in this environnement and that it really regroups all my interest and brings out the best of my creativity. I love exploring in 3D trying new shapes, reworking what I have done, trying different structures and seeing which one works the best, and I feel like it is something essential to be experimental and try again and again until you find the shape that fits well in your eyes and that brings out your concept. I feel like I am always drawn to fashion and even in workshops that weren’t related to fashion directly (for example architecture, sculpture or even textiles) I always was interested in developing the works I had done in fashion designs, and bring out structures that at first were dedicated for the space and not really for the body, I take them in a different context and create structures for the body (through collage, layering, drawing or even photoshop). I keep going back to fashion so I definitely think that it is the best pathway for me. "
