The badly typeset text on the left contains quite a few mistakes:
- Some punctuation marks (such as a colon after the word ‘DESIGN’) aren’t separated from the final letters of words by a clear space
- Poor usage of italic throughout the text because rather than using the regular one, forced italic is applied to the words;
- No space left after ellipsis which suggests omission;
- Many unnecessary indents in the middle of the paragraph before starting a new sentence;
- Incorrect usage of dashes by mixing up hyphens with en dashes such as ‘distance-learning’ or ‘stand-by’;
- Incorrect word-breaking because of the separated syllables;
- Wrong quotation marks used throughout the whole text ;
- Repeated incorrect usage of letterspacing such as words ‘DESIGN’ (first line) or ‘NORMAN POTTER’ (last line) in which some of the letters are overlapping each other which means the letterspacing is too narrow or vice versa when they are spaced too widely (eg. ‘The shorter Oxford English dictionary);
- The first text has a wider word spacing which makes it more uneven and less justified than the second one;
- The first text clearly has a harder rag compared to the second one as it has a wider hyphenation zone than the second one. It is not necessarily a mistake, but it is more pleasant to the eye to look at and read the second text.
