White Space - Day 2

I was able to use drawings to firstly develop my idea quickly,  when coming up with 10 ideas to fit my manifesto. It was really useful to quickly visualise each idea, to be able to view what would be a better approach, what would have a strong visual impact and to see what was best fitting for my manifesto. For example I wanted to create a supermarket shelf of paper objects as this is where I got my initial inspiration from but when I drew it out I realised that it may be too overcomplicated which wouldn't match my 'simple in composition' element in my manifesto. It made me realise that I may want to carry on with my collection of water bottles as this has already had a strong visual impact as I had positive responses to them. After talking to my peers I realised that there was a few ideas I could develop and when I drew them out and looked like avery strong collection.  The development of how I would approach displaying the images, would make this collection more refined and a stronger outcome.

When talking to my peers about how to develop my ideas I realised the way that I had displayed my bottles previously (on white paper) reminded me of Malevich's 'white on white'. When they suggested that I try different coloured paper it triggered the thought of how Malevich worked with the square in different colours on different backgrounds. For example 'Black Square' 1913 is a black square on white background. This triggered that I could bring the thoughts of Robert Ryman that viewed colours as unemotional and the series aspect of Malevich Squares to create my own series of black and white unemotional object on black and white backgrounds. When looking at these artists especially Ryaman's 'Ledger' I realised that even when trying to display unemotional effects it onset mean it can have character of only white, there are shades within my pieces just as there are brushstrokes within ' Ledger'. I think this was important because I used a fairly unsubtle method that was inspired by Christos 'wrapped Reichstag' it didn't matter that it had character because it still showed the objets as just forms and unemotional as they were almost a ghost of themselves. When coming to display them I also used less conceptual inspiration that I had seen when researching white space to display them as I had seen in a photography book 'I like you, I like you a lot' - drawing your full attention towards each image.

In this project I think that I have used my manifesto successfully as a guideline of what to produce in my work and a platform to start my work instead of constraints. I was able to use the key themes such as unemotional, simple compositions and dull colour to look at my research and the inspiration around me and morph my ideas into one by problem solving how I can create a collection from them. It also helped me develop my initial idea as it gave me a framework to work with which allowed my pieces to not be overcomplicated. I think it was straight forward enough to know to focus on objects and less on meaning they may promote and placed an image in your mind with the colour description of how an collection should potentially look. I thought it was important that I also had one rule on creating complimentary collections as this would be the factor that would link most obviously the aspects of each piece that adds to the 'removed form movement'

I really valued the group discussion this week as it provided a new perspective on my manifesto and my development and how it could be stronger. With group discussion I often find that it triggers new ideas or links between thoughts or artists you may have seen which would have otherwise been absent. For example without the suggestion of using other colours than white I wouldn't have thought of the new type of collection I would make that would link Ryman and Malevich together.

Interaction - Day1

Overall I think Todays project went very well. As a pair we were able to adapt our quote from 'the Boy who Cried Wolf' in context with what we had both experienced as women. I think using our own experience as young women really allowed us to see the many similarities between the lessons taught by the fable and what we as women hear n a daily basis. For example we are taught that the boy 'brought it on himself' which is a saying we hear all too often when girls are assaulted and asked if they were drinking or what were they wearing. I think the fact that we can associate with this meant that we knew what type of interaction was appropriate and effective for women to feel comfortable to not keep quiet incase others don't believe them. I think was a successful choice by us to let women simply pin on a mannequin where they have been undesirably touched as it is a simple act for women and they feel like they could contribute to talking about it without it being too exposing. From the still created I think this was the most graphically effective of our ideas as it wasn't overcomplicated and showed that it simply shows how often it happens without almost shouting it people. I think this could potentially be a more effective to create awareness as many people were interested in what the pins showed and it was able to create a conversation instead of - going back to the fable - teaching people to be quiet about it.

We came across an issue towards the end of the session when deciding where to place the mannequin because no where in particular is for women within the college campus. We realised that we hadn't thought about men  and we didn't want to leave anyone out and not be able to contribute. This dilemma was confusing and we came up with the solution to have a colour for men and another colour pin for women. We didn't know if this was too complicating and straying from the fact we had arrived at this concept as two women and the attitudes we had experienced.

Making my booklet

Overall I was really happy with the outcome for the layout of my booklet and the way it came out. I think using the idea of the lights that I found in the Burberry exhibition came out well because it I think the way I used my layout from the poster I made yesterday was really successful. I used the design but flipped it so it would be similar to the shape of a chandelier. Then placed the image of the chandelier behind the whole grid, using the feedback that this was a good approach in the poster crit. I think this was a good idea as the shape worked well with the chandelier which was a good first image to introduce the setting of the pictures as its a memorable original feature of Old Sessions House. The front cover also introduced the concept of rectangles as the grid which I used throughout the book as well as working with white space. I was really happy about how the rectangular forms were able to reflect the lighting as they were versatile enough to work with each picture. For example I thought my middle spread was the most successful as it was able to show the complicated wires of the lights and then cut them off to show the simple bare lightbulb. The back of the book also was able to signify a full stop almost because I could reflect the end in a small picture of a single light bulb.

The white space within the book also worked very well as it would have been very complicated with many lights all over the page but using minimal corresponding pictures with the white background had enough in it to portray the atmosphere of the exhibition. The white space I think actually solidified the atmosphere I wanted to create - the raw materials and basic, functional objects that were accompanied by sophisticated chandeliers. It is simple and partially empty creating portraying the same atmosphere created at the exhibition because of the layout there and the objects chosen to be in the house.

In the final outcome I was happy how the images came out on the silk paper. It showed the glossiness of the lights working very well with the theme of the booklet.

I think if possible it would have been nice to have experimented with some text within the booklet. It would have been nice to show how simple text that was seen on the front page could have interacted with the images.

Print Project

I was quite happy about how my designs and my print came out within the print and illustration project today. I wanted to create the atmosphere of how I felt at the Burberry exhibition at Old sessions by designing a print that showed the most significant visuals I saw at the exhibition. This was often to do with the space for example the chandeliers and walls with amazing colours as the paint had been stripped back. What also stood out for me was not the clothes but the different lighting they had put in there almost like installations. They were in different forms such as projections, old televisions and stacked beam lights that you would find in an office. The mixture of old extravagant decor and modern but low tech, almost fuzzy lights created these amazing contrasting visuals.

When creating these it was hard to incorporate so many light sources into one piece as it became overcrowded. This meant I ended up deciding on two particular light sources. I chose a television and a chandelier to show the old and new with a textured wall in the background and some silhouettes of modern pictures that were also on hung on the walls by Burberry. I found the hardest part was to recreate the textured walls via print. It was more abstract than I would have liked but it turned quite well and added some more texture without making the print complicated. I also discovered to make the TV and light coming from it more obvious I could add some simple lines from the corner of the screen going outwards to show the glow of the television. It was also useful to separate the TV from the plinth it was on by making the front of the plinth a foggy colour and have the tv block colour like it usually is black. This effect of shading helped make the image more clear and obvious to what it was.

Overall I was happy how my print came out and it was able to recreate the atmosphere of the Old Sessions House that I wanted to create. The fact that it was representing the space and exhibition objects Burberry had placed there to create a particular environment I was very happy with because this is what I personally found most capturing about the exhibition, not the clothes. I was also very happy with the simplicity of how I visualised the objects such saw such as the chandelier. This made the print much more effective in my eyes and more graphic.

I also was able to work well with the timings finishing the designs and cutting of the print in the allotted time. I think the simplicity and blocky objects I chose to do also had to thank for this.

27.09.17 final moving image

27.09.17 moving image with traffic sound

27.09.17

Making our moving image

when we arrived at our location we started to create our original plan for the moving image which was a video of our own blue and white found objects been grabbed from out of screen. When we looked around however there was already many washed up objects on the Thames shore that were blue and white. We then decided to adapt to our location and film these instead objects as we found them in the water. This change of decision mean that another layer of depth was added to our found objects turned shells idea as you could perhaps interpret the idea to be influenced by pollution and littering. We could then add the meaning and follow up that they're not actual shells - that this isn't natural - and could make an almost campaign against environmental damage.

This decision also made a better outcome I think as the editing for the other idea was quite jolty and not smooth and this felt simple and more interesting to watch the objects where we found them. However I perhaps would have changed our moving image to make the picture landscape and more professional. It would have also have been interesting to attach text that linked the idea of shells and the unnatural shells we found. This could have then made it into more of a campaign and could have been used outside of this project.

When editing the video we chose the sound to be one 30 second wave sound clip using inspiration from 'The Godfather' as they use continuous sound of a baptism over different moving images. I think this was an important decision because It was what linked all the images together and made the film flow. We experimented with what sound we used using both a busy background noise of traffic that made it obvious that when filming water the pollution in the river wasn't calm and was unnatural. We also tried using the calm wave noises which would be relaxing when listening to the film but when you look at the images they are relaxing and it almost makes you feel annoyed that the objects are there and not beautiful natural riverscapes. We decided to go with the latter because I think it draws more of reaction out of the audience and more of an anger to change which would be the response you would want if I were to make a campaign.

Typography project - Crit evaluation

This crit allowed me to reflect upon my work from many peoples perspective and maybe view how my work could have been better or more developed. It has made me realise that I should still follow through with a positive outcome even though it may not be what my original idea was. This will allow me to experiment and and take things that one step further, even if it is not a success it may trigger other thoughts as to what could be.

I think  my outcomes were successful as they portrayed the image of ribbon and therefore the logic behind the typeface 'haberdasher' well. I think I could have improved upon some aspects of each outcome - the photograph of the letter form in the environment and my vector drawing of my word.

Perhaps if the photograph had a whiter light then I would have been able to create the environment of a clean sophisticated picture, reflecting my flowing ribbon like letter "A" form. It would have also been useful to have bigger pins just to make it absolutely clear of what they were whilst also backing up my name of "Haberdasher'. This would have also meant that the pastel colours of the pins would have popped and I perhaps could have had fewer creating the minimal more refined, clean image I wanted to create.

My vector letterforms could have also been enhanced by by perhaps adding some gradient to show that the folding was more ribbon like and less like origami, which may have been perceived in the 2D vector letters. Even thought this may have been improved i thought that the poster was my best outcome as a whole; the letters were clear and representative of the word, the layout of the letters worked well and I was able to add a logo type illustration of a pin to the poster which was still minimal but also allowed my to tie my photograph and poster together.

18.09.17

Typography project - day 1

There were many restrictions in todays task that led to my changing my font choice or the way I created the type. When creating many ideas in small time there was a time constraint which meant my designs were not often complicated but very minimal and often just played on the triangle shape of the letter A. The small piece of paper that we had in this time for each letter allowed and probably promoted me to do more 3D letters as they were more sturdy. This meant that I could play with shadows a lot more and the shape that light can make to create a form. I tried to recreate the most successful letter (using a fold and curve in the paper to create the two outer lines of an A, almost like a triangle) with other letters but the light restraint which made it not perfect an also the thin paper we were using which often led to a dimmer shadow meant that the letters were difficult to read. When we had to choose a particular design the lack of time and and suitable light source meant that I didn't choose what I saw to be my most successful original 'A' - which played with light to create a triangle - and I chose a more obvious and 2D type. This letter 2D letter type looks almost like ribbon or origami. I thought it was successful because it had constraints to keep to whilst creating the letter. They had to be made out of one piece of paper by cutting three strips of paper but making sure the three strips were joining and then folding the paper into letters. I also thought it was successful because it came out with a clear legible outcome whilst looking quite sophisticated as they looked ribbon-like.

I chose the word 'Haberdasher' to be my type name as it is where ribbon is sold. The location of may photograph was representative of my word 'Haberdasher' as I used pins to pin up the ribbon-like letters to a zip, enforcing the meaning of 'Haberdasher' with other items you would find in this shop. I also pinned this to a denim jacket to give another element of the haberdashery, however this may have been overcomplicated and it may have just been better to keep it to just the letter bunting. This may have made a bolder image that was clearer and made a better image that was more minimalist - like my origami/ribbon-like letter type.

GROUP TASK - 3 WORDS

Today I think our group worked well and was able to successfully encourage each others ideas. Working in a group immediately makes you realise how people bringing their own backgrounds and sharing their thoughts completely broadens the idea scope that you had with us each having unique takes on just a few words. In our group this was very helpful and from the very beginning everyones perspectives sparked new ideas in each other. This allowed us to come up with some very imaginative concepts staring from only three words: Stone, sharpen and pessimism. A broadened approach meant that imagery, that I may not have thought of, was able to link well with other aspects of our ideas and eventually becoming a focal point of developing designs. Even primary research came differently to all of us and hopefully will make our presentation even more descriptive with sketches, rubbings and photographs.

Even though it was very useful and exciting to step out of the box by using lots of different perspectives, this excitement may have got us slightly carried away. Sometimes ideas had aspects that were unlinked to the thought process and even not knowing what our concept would actually become became an issue. I felt I could have had a more proactive role in making sure I understood every factor of each concept so that it made sense to me when trying to explain it and therefore made sense when we make a presentation.

Being unable to use the internet meant that we had to firstly rely on our own knowledge of the world around us. This could be difficult at times because you were unable to check something and  you had to be confident in the thoughts you suggested to your team. It also meant that the culture and history that we know in our group seemed to reflect as that is what we were certain of which was very interesting to see on our thumbnail visuals of out ideas.

2.11.17

White space  - crit

Overall I was relatively happy with my outcome. There were definitely things I would have liked to have refined however.

The series of images I chose I think were successful in themselves. I thought it was important to use the obvious aspect of white space within the graphic world as white space within layout. By using white space around the image not only does it enhance the idea of white space behind the thinking of the actual pieces within the photograph, making it more obvious that its about the nothingness and observing forms as they are. It also creates a link between each image so they are even more obviously a complimentary collection.

I would have liked to had displayed the actual bottle forms better if possible. In an ideal situation the would have been spaced out equally along a wall perhaps on plinths as if they were in a gallery. I think this would have been really nice to have viewed the forms individually and more as if they were sculptures - noticing the textures, folds and silhouettes. I also liked the suggestion from my feedback of perhaps hanging them. This could perhaps have had a nice effect as it would have been even more obvious that they were shells of bottles and you were also able to view inside the shells of where the bottles had been removed.

In the future it would be nice to play with these ideas, perhaps develop them with other complimentary collections of the removed form.

30.10.17

White Space - Day 1

Today I found the most difficulty came when exploring evidence of white space whilst trying to fulfill the questions that the tutor gave us to think about different aspects of an outcome. For example I found it difficult to try and incorporate 'how to make the viewer the author' considering most of my ideas were for passive display after I had created the work. To make the viewer the author you would almost have to make your white space interactive which I found very hard to image as I reacted to white space as nothingness which makes sense to me but would be hard to interact with because it would make it something.

I learnt from the process we followed today that it is useful to define what you interpret a concept to be and why so. This can really inform your following decisions later on and allow them to have more depth and logic. For example when looking for my white spaces this meant that I naturally just looked at objects as just forms with no suggestion of emotional or other meanings. This also allowed me to think about what artists I relate and have similar viewpoint to and study some of the work to help me inform how to show this perspective in my work. For example With Rymans 'ledger' I was able to identify with his view of white being unemotional. This informed me that you can just view objects as themselves and appreciate the forms and look at them unemotionally, which I had done, but i could also represent them with the unemotional colour of white.

I think forming a manifesto allows you to develop your work or create following pieces that are logical and therefore fit in with a movement you have thought about. This then speaks for itself as a collaboration of pieces with a common process. I think when creating something that can fit into a larger collection or movement gives it a reason for certain things to be the way they are a justifies your decisions you have made because you agree with a particular movement. I think it can lead a designer to an outcome quicker and allows you to have a starting point and can adapt to your particular subject. I also think it can be restrictive which is sometimes hard for a designer to overcome but allows an opportunity for intelligent solutions that are often more rewarding and have a logic and a layer of depth to be able to talk about.

26.10.17

Interact Crit

Me and Emily approached working in a pair quite successfully in this project I think because we not only brought our own knowledge into the project but found something we could both relate to we could draw on to be our subject of the interaction. We also used our experience to try and see how others would feel in reacting to a sensitive issue such as sexual harassment and therefore make appropriate decisions so they felt comfortable and therefore they also get something from the reaction and its not just an outcome for me and Emily.

The decisions we made to be incorporative to being n a public space with a sensitive issue were mostly to make people feel comfortable and for it to be a simple and quiet interaction if they wanted it to be. We found this to be appreciated as it wasn't forceful but we were still providing an outlet for women to speak up. We also found it to be very appreciated that they weren't being recorded and that the respect of anonymity was kept as thy asked if we were recording and they were happy to know that we weren't. I think that women were happy to know that even though it was an art project, we still had the respect of those interacting and that the documentation, which was important, isn't as important as the way that they are treated in the interaction and the outcome.

I liked how Jebi and Gen were able to get very honest answers out of their interviews. It made the piece very real and shocking at times which was very interesting to listen to the real thoughts of people who may normally give quite a mundane answer to their question 'what are you like at night?'. They did this by having a few questions lined up and asking people and I think the fact they were talking to them was interesting because its the most simple interaction we see often and it got the most honest and shocking outcomes.

24.10.17

 Interact - day 2

group crit and interaction

After having our crit we were confident in our decision to just choose women as our subject for the interaction. I think it was a good decision as we created this concept with our own experiences and specific attitudes towards women and responses to sexual harassment they have experienced that is often disappointing and frustrating for many women. Broadening this concept may minimise the impact that the message has, may make it more complicated and also attitudes towards women is an issue in itself that needs to be spoken about. We also took on board not to have a blunt sign that replicated text that might convey the fable we got the concept from but to have a neutral, text inviting women to contribute if they want so that people know its something serious and its a place for them to feel safe.

I think the interaction itself was successful as many women pinned one the mannequin which proved that they did want to talk about it and were very serious about it. It was also very personally pleasing to know they appreciated the gesture we were making and they could contribute to as they told us they really liked the project. The fact that our interaction made women feel safe and they saw we wanted to create discussion about it and that they contribute in confidence with other women was  what they experienced which was probably the most important part of our interaction and the biggest success.

However it was interesting to see that when there most people around when it was lunch time - it was then when the least women came and pinned the dolls. This may suggest they didn't feel comfortable interacting around many people an maybe felt uncomfortable showing why it is so important to break this barrier and talk about it an not to normalise the experience many women have.

In the future or if we had more time I would have liked to take the mannequin into public to see how they reacted. It would have been interesting to make several mannequins and place them in different areas to see how women reacted in different environments such as in public, perhaps in a public ladies room or in a place where there is mostly an older generation. I would have liked to see if the reaction was different and if perhaps women feel even less comfortable talking about it in public.

12.10.17

Layout Crit

09.10.17

Layout project - day 1

Todays project has helped me think of different ways of viewing a page. Using grids means that you can create a complex or simplistic design whilst looking clean and professional. It was useful to look at the different grid designs we could see around archway not only to view as it meant that you can see grids in many things and each page can be a different design. When also looking at other peoples designs I learnt that it can be effective to do diagonal designs and putting one image over two or more grid spaces. It also helped me not to think about filling the page but to think about the affectedness of the space and where would be good to leave the page with no text or image.

I thought it was useful to work use analog processes as it was more natural and instinctive to cut wherever on the page and for the shapes created to not necessarily to be perfect. This meant that you could almost make mistakes that turned out to work well with the page and the other shapes around it. This was also achieved by purely using your own shapes you have found and adapting them which isn't a normal shape that you would necessarily create using InDesign or other software. It also meant that once you had Drawn you shape on your card you could either choose to o merge shapes and cut them out as one or not to cut shapes out at all. I personally found it useful because if i had straight away used digital media to come up with my grid I think I would have used the shapes directly from the images but in using analog it meant that I was able to quickly play with merging shapes and developing my design quickly to create a more bold graphic design that was developed from looking up at a staircase.

I was very pleased with my outcome for my layout poster. I think the grid for the poster was bold but simple. It was different to a usual magazine or newspaper layout but I liked it because it seemed like more of a poster layout, advertisement or layout that focused on image. The simple concept of taking the colours of two cold images and then merging those colours as the the blocks merge together I think is a really simple idea but effective. I liked the way it told the story of colours and becoming a completely different image through their merging. I think however it would have been nice to incorporate some text into the layout. Some simple words could have really solidified the story for example words such as merge if i had found them in the text could have made the overall layout more finalised and easy for a viewer to look at for longer.

28.09.17

Moving Image Crit Reflection

By reviewing other peoples work in the crit I learnt that some ways of producing film make it more engaging than others. It also helped me realise what I could have done much better in my own film. For example it would have been much better to either do my film landscape or like some people did have two or images on the screen at once. Perhaps if I had created a split screen effect the idea of only one ongoing sound clip of waves in the background may have come through more. I also realised that even though some people had text on theirs sometimes it can be more thought evoking and intriguing to have no text and just moving image. In our case as we now had a deeper meaning to our moving image that linked to a widely used campaign - recycling/pollution - we found without using text it was obvious enough to assume what it was about and therefore more thought provoking without text.

It was sometimes hard to work in a pair as we had different ideas and the language barrier we had meant we were slower and didn't bounce off each others ideas as much. However generally we both listened to each others ideas and both were able to decide to go for the best option for the best outcome. For example when I saw all the white and blue objects on the riverside I made the decision to go ahead and film them before the tide came. When Linghai arrived he supported the decision I made as he also thought it was a better idea and we then just tested the original idea as he wanted to see how it might have worked out which was also a good idea.

Our own personal lives influenced our work as the idea of found objects around us meant that we literally took pieces of our own lives and used them in our work. As we had also been to the tate modern before we knew that we could get down to the riverside. There were also more metaphorical ways that our own influences inspired our work. For example for our original still image the idea of finding objects or shells on the beach I can link back directly to collecting shells and pebbles when visiting the beach. Generally having exposure to a lot of campaigning to raise awareness for pollution in the 21st century meant when we came across our colour-schemed items in the beach meant we made the decision to change our moving image because we thought it would be obvious what the meaning was and gave the image another layer of meaning.

25.09.17

Fashion Communication and Moving Image project

How does a design context change the nature of our work?

Often I think when looking at a brief even if it may be very vague we look at it in the light that we may think other people may view it. For example in this brief even when given only two words to work with the outcome as we are creating a film had to be clear enough for the audience to know around about what those original words were. In the field of graphic design I think often we create a link and a meaning for the title we are working with and create a campaign.

how might we evaluate the success of our work

I think that often the most successful work is not only something that is interesting or aesthetically pleasing to look at but is clear what it is promoting or trying to show. Without this a piece of communicative design work is often lost. Even if the idea is to not tell the whole story but is to intrigue someone it should have a way to communicate what to look up what the project or work is about.

what potential role or function might our work have outside this project

A lot of our work has a greater meaning behind the images that we have created due to the words that we have used. Words such as environmental, political and social trigger many issues or topics that people want to be discussed or heard. For example my project includes the words environmental and found objects. By thinking about where you find things in the environment we thought of collecting shells. This then led to us finding other objects but in an environment like the beach so we created 'found object shells' out of things that we could find. This triggered the thought of pollution and finding rubbish on the beach which could have a much bigger message about pollution

how do our own  lives and experiences inform our work

This also shows that often the issues that we read about or that are around us trigger the thoughts that come into our work. This is often shown when you work from people in different communities or from places with different cultures. The environment different people live in often trigger different perhaps more personal topics that others may not have thought of. For example the concept of shells as found object can come from my experience of collecting shells on beaches.

what did I learn from the success and failures of others

I learnt that often the most effective work was the simple, well made pieces that you could easily get the idea of what the original words were. These didn't always have to have a deeper meaning in them but were more eye-catching because you could think about them and what they represented. The clarity meant they were easy to look at and often I think we can look at these pieces for a longer time.

Typography project - day 2

This task today has made me think about my letter forms in two different ways.

Firstly I produced a larger 3 dimensional version of my letter has allowed me to extent my concept of the ribbon-like form. It meant that I thought about what more ribbon like aspects I can add to my form. With more paper (as I was using A4 instead of an eighth of A4) I could add more undulations to the actual letter and could extend the legs to appear like ribbons flowing as they sometimes do out of ribbon shelves in craft shops. I then photographed my letterform. I chose to suspend my letter form when photographing it so that you would be able to see the flowing ribbon-like legs of he 'A' after thinking about my inspiration of how they flow out of ribbon shelves. I wanted it to look very clean like the letter form itself. I found this quite difficult because I didn't have the right lighting or background so the image came out with more of a yellow light than I wanted. However I still had two outcomes I was quite happy with. One that corresponded with the softness I wanted to create and image quality that was a bit hazy but still clean and with a chic feel (similar to inspiration of photography by Juergen Teller for Daisy by Marc Jacobs campaign). However even though this seems to be my initial aim after taking many photographs I also realised the the sharper image that seemed to be darker and implied the softness of the image less kept catching my eye. It was still clean and sophisticated but the sharpness along with the darker tone of the lighting seemed to be more contrasting and therefore interesting. I could also view this as something that could be chic - similar to Juergen Tellers photography for Céline in the March 2012 Vogue advertisement.

I also created a vector of my type. Within my vector design I preferred to outline the type and the shapes that the folds made within it and not the fill within the the letterforms. I did this as I was able to illustrate the individual fold and with a crisp outline that helped keep the typeface looking more minimal as it may have become complicated with all the fold lines  and a fill. I liked this outcome as it followed the minimalistic aesthetic I created with the original smaller typeface and the larger 3D letter I also created today. !poster layout!

Within the tasks today I learnt some more aspects of illustrator that I didn't know before. For example I now know that if you don't close the path you have made then you will have difficulty to fill the shapes you have made. Even though I had decided I didn't want to fill the shapes in this project in the future I will make sure I can create a vector that can be compatible with your final desired outcome.

3 WORDS PRESENTATION

Visualising what our initial ideas were incorporating stone and sharpen allowed us to view first hand what would be a more coherent and interesting idea to take forward. This may not have been the case if we had chosen something that sounded more interesting but when we tried to visualise what it would actually have become it was difficult to justify why we would have chosen to make the other ideas and in the manner of how it would b presented. Firstly it good to actually visually show that out idea we took forward was literally our initial instinct when we put sharpen and stone together we can make weapons or tools. When we had chosen our idea it was good to visualise that we wanted to create because we then thought not only about the sculptures of modern day weapons but also about the surroundings and how maybe that should also be a part of work - creating a installation of many weapons in an atmospheric room of just one sculpture intend of just one weapon sculpture.

Primary and secondary research had an important role throughout our project. The primary research allowed us to realise the materials around us such as concrete is almost like modern flint and it would be good to use this as our modern stone for our sculpture. Primary research also played a part later in the project as we wanted to create an atmospheric room (inspiration by Rothko) and therefore used this modern stone as the materials for the room. It was also useful to use these photographs in our collage visual representation of the room in our presentation. The secondary research helped us develop our ideas tremendously by making us realise how small things such as the shape and colour of a room can lead to you to an even more pessimistic outcome. As well as this it also made us think about how and where our installation would be presented triggering new and insightful ideas making our project ore thoughtful. It triggered thoughts that it should be a public installation to create even more pessimism. Also looking at realistic sculptures created the idea that the weapons should just start of as a block of concrete and be carved from them (in the style of Rodin). All of these secondary resources not only gave us inspiration about how it would physically look and the tangible aspects of the piece but also triggered thoughts about each aspect of the design which added depth with a reason for every part of the installation.

I think our presentation was overall good. It was logical which allowed it to be clear to the audience. We had secondary resources to back up out ideas so people would be able to visualise it as well as a representation that was created on photoshop with our own pictures of concrete with a before and after of the concrete blocks.  It may have been interesting to have a physical piece of concrete to show the materials we would use and atmosphere it would create.
