Atta Kim

Reference:https://themorningnews.org/gallery/the-museum-project

By viewing Atta Kim’s photography I find he created displays in a clear glass box by using basic human elements, like basic violence, sex,and ideology, etc. I think the hue of this image somehow remind me of another photographer Ren Hang who also used strong colour and film-like with metaphorical meaning inside. Comparing to Hang’s work he uses many public area as his scene. For me is like exposure of insider to the whole society and being live relics. Furthermore, is also a way to showing our existences a naked creature naturally occurring the narrow spaces representing the pressure—physical and mental way—from our lives. I can feel the body is quashed and uncomfortable and also arouse my sympathy about my feeling to the whole society something link with existential, identity and negligible.

MARINA ABRAMOVIÇ a performance artist I picked up one of her work which is called ART MUST BE BEAUTIUL, ARTIST MUST BE BEAUTIFUL. Basically the video was filming her brushing her hair with two different combs forcefully, without a pause, for more than 50 minutes.  While she was brushing her hair she was also self-talking repeating the same sentence—‘ART MUST BE BEAUTIUL, ARTIST MUST BE BEAUTIFUL’ like a mantra. By observing her emotion changing I can see she is suffering and also discontented of the sentence she was repeating all the time. To be more specific, the constant repetition of the words and the creepy reduplicative motions give the work a continuing intensity that makes the artist and the audience into a trance-like state, which overcoming the physical pain frees the body and mind from the conventions of the society and culture.

Appearing Disappearing #8, 2017.

Hyumee Lee

Reference:https://hyunmeelee.com/2017/03/21/abstract-alchemy/

Hyunmee Lee’s current series sort of creating a quiet power of meditative. Also the transformation of experience to art, observation of art, emotion of art, or even idea to art is the alchemy of the artist itself that I can tell through those works. Lee’s works have struck a responsive chord in the heart of me by those harmonious opposition and the arrangement shows sense of purity as well. By looking at those works, I like the balance of the juxtaposition of bold, dynamic shapes and delicate nuances of colour fit so well and it somehow link with meditative ritual and introspection by the brush movements. I can feel the artist turn paintings into a gateway to somewhere is quite metaphysical, wherein shape and colour are symbolising breath and life, purity and wholeness. Then I fund her idea is to show the mystical power of Korean Shamanism in a lyrically way which I was not thinking about when I look at Lee’s works.

Duke & Wigmore #47

Gary Komarin

Reference:http://www.garykomarin.com/everyday-items-art-works-on-paper/contemporary-landscape/

By looking at Gary Komarin’s paintings I can come up with whimsical idea of people’s movements. I like the combination of different painting materials that he uses somehow shows different feelings by altering the thickness of lines. By experimenting with abstractionism painting I the result was unforeseen at the beginning. Adding different layers in order to present different emotional messages through the bush strokes shifted. Taking my experience of abstract painting I feel the distance between these lines make me feel comfortable.

This painting is one of the collection called ‘Duke and Wigmore’. Duke and Wigmore are two streets that he lived before. This collection is to resonate for him poetically and metaphorically. His idea of using these two streets’ name was the fitness to these painting which are chaos and control. It also link to my theme somehow relationships in the society is complex, chaos but we are capable to control the distance between interpersonal spaces. Looking at these painting, there is something that I can not name it, which is important to let uncertainty become part of audience viewing process. I think that is the beauty of abstractionism painting.

What To Ask of Others, 2011

Karla Black

Reference: http://www.itsnicethat.com/articles/karla-black

Karla Black is a abstractionism artist, creating immersive sculptures that explore physical experience as a key to communicate and understand the world around us. As the hanging polythene with pink chalk dust piece of work really catch my eyes for the usage of everyday materials also the manipulated form as well. This is part painting and float installation also part performance as the ties of colour, texture which give me a new impression of contemporary art. I like the swathes of colour and the floating feeling which leads me really want to know what is her purpose of doing it. While looking at her work, she uses everyday matter such as soap, cotton wool and toothpaste are explored as new and also traditional art materials including plaster, pigment and paint, expanding the limits of what sculpture can be. Her works have ranged from delicate cellophane, paper and polythene hanging pieces suspended with ribbon or tape to large-scale floor-based environments made from plaster, chalk powder and soil. By looking up to her works I think I can try different materials like everyday matter maybe to be part of my material resource somehow the scent might lend to addition presence to the audience.

The silent language

Edward T. Hall

Reference: Hall, E. (1990). The silent language. New York: Anchor Books.

This project is based on the need for personal space, and the increasing anxiety created when the distance between people becomes too little. I am exploring the word ‘distance’ in physical and psychological ways. The focus is on peoples inner thoughts and making these tangible through the medium of textiles.

As people we can’t often distinguish between superficial expressions, and people’s real thoughts which are unconscious, facial expression can be deceiving, but body language can tell the truth.

‘People surround themselves with a "bubble" of personal space that they claim as their own, and they tend to become stressed when other people invade their "bubble." Our personal space protects us from too much arousal and helps us feel comfortable when we communicate with other people.’ Reference:http://www.mhhe.com/cls/psy/ch15/intdis.mhtml

One of my contextual references is from anthropologist Edward T. Hall who informs my concept with more theory. He pointed out that humans have four different spatial distance needs within different relationships.Including public, social, personal and intimate distance. He assumed that culture decides people’s understanding of time and space which also leads misunderstanding because of multi-culture, and i agree.

Test the Boundaries of Personal Space

Personal Space: How Close is Too Close?

Interpersonal Distance

These videos probe that Hall's theory of interpersonal distance is right. Through these videos, people feel uncomfortable, angry, anxious when their personal space is encroached.

Research has revealed that there are four different zones of interpersonal space:

Public space is anything more than 12 feet and is used for speeches or theater. This is also the normal distance in places such as parks or beaches.

Social space ranges between four and 12 feet away from the person and is reserved for strangers and new acquaintances.

Personal space begins about an arm’s length away, ranging between 18 inches and four feet. This space is used in conversations with friends and in group discussions.

Intimate space ranges from touch to 18 inches and is reserved for children, close family members and friends, lovers and pet animals.

How the Internet Enables Intimacy

The main idea of this speech:

  • Internet helps people communicate more convenient.

This speech that I chosen from Ted Talks explaining how internet enables intimacy. I think this is more about gaining relationship and internet helps people to communicate or keep in touch easily. I did not find the link between my theme and this speech because my project is about interpersonal distance.

'Shorten the Distance' Task 1/4

'Shorten the Distance' Task 3/4

'Shorten the Distance' Task 2/4

'Shorten the Distance' Task 4/4

'Shorten the Distance' Task

I have set up my first task, recording two of my peers shorten the distance and getting feedback from them.

Emily: At first I felt okay and pleasant,As the distance got shortened, I began to try to avert eye contact in an act of shyness. When we cuddled together, embracing each other, I felt nervous but also comforted.

Ana:I feel a sense of confusion and lost,as if we meant to be together but something push away from us. The distance between makes me feel I'm a stranger for her. A mysterious and peculiar atmosphere, deliberately enigmatic.

According to their feedback, Edward T. Hall’s conclusions was right. One of the interpersonal distance in our social interactions is social distance. ‘It extends from approximately 4 to 12 feet, and includes the space required for more formal social interactions. Hearing and vision are the primary senses involved. The social distance is often utilized in business, for example, in interviewing new applicants for employment or negotiating for a raise.’ said by Edward T. Hall.

Comrades: Almost a Love Story,1996

Chan Ho-sun

Reference:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usoYcPE-YGY

The story was based in 90s’ Hong Kong life style. The movie was telling Chinese mainlanders who migrate to Hong Kong struggle from life then end up falling in love.I really like the set of the characters. Li Qiao is an opportunist and Cantonese speaker from Guangzhou, who regard Hong Kong as opportunity city to improve her life stander. Li Xiaojun is a Northerner who is naive and curious about those new things. The director using two different view to present the migration life in Hong Kong and makes people feel empathy to their experience. The loneliness of living in the big city inevitably brings the two into a passionate love affair. Through many things happened during the highlight part the firm ends with Xiaojun and Li Qiao fatefully meeting each other in front of an store that has a display Television playing a music video by Teresa Teng, whom songs is linked with the film title. Then I think of the companionship that people are seeking through their whole life. Everyone is individual but we all need partner to colour our daily.

Relevant and Irrelevant Films

The Lobster

  • Hypothesis a society that people must be in couple.
  • Life Instinct, if they don't get married they will die or turn into animals
  • Forcing people get together, in other words is like shorten distance between individuals.

Room 2015

  • Infantile autism caused by babyhood.
  • Emphasise family bond.

I think this film is irrelevant to the theme I am doing. I thought the room was symbolic to the gap between two generations.

Farewell My Concubine 1993

  • Homosexual's love story with Chinese Traditional Art aesthetic connotation.
  • Physical and mental distance preference between gay and straight people.

I think is relevant to this project because it shows different preference of interpersonal distance. The homosexual prefer to treat the straight more closely like couple while the straight just want to be friend. In this case, I found that respecting is vital of interpersonal relationship. When the relationship is unilaterally-conceived then it will course dyadic conflict.

Reference:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffg88ELLqOM

This was produced by Shanghai animation film studio named Shuke and Beita. I looked up to the hue of this animation the usage of colours were very colourful and also combing with Chinese traditional wash painting. Also the animation was for children with so many principles though it was not that scientific but looking the world and simplify many things that are so complicated for adults  and represented from child’s point of view. For me different characters symbolise different status personality in the whole society. By looking at their exaggerated motions and undisguised emotion expressions I can feel the children’s simplicity. In this case, I want to use this illustration style simplify those big words expressing my feeling from children’s point of view.

Karel Malich

Reference:http://www.karelmalich.cz/en/photogallery

An fine art artist  who makes sculptures and drawings as well. Comparing to the installations—wire objects I prefer those coloured pastels and print works. At the very beginning I was trying to identify the object Malich is painting for. Then I found that Malich is an expert of creating misty atmosphere by mixing materials. By looking at Malich undistinguishable works I start to focusing on the texture and also the combination of colours. The artist creates the movement successfully by those simple lines and circles in abstraction and geometry way which reminds me of undifferentiated cells. Malich changes the tones and color rendering part somehow expressing emotional message. What’s more, the artist are capable to use dark colours very playful somehow I can feel the delightful, more positive emotions though those drawings by his experiments with light in his exceptional pastels and gouaches that literally glow with colours.

Seated Figure on a Bench

Willem de Kooning

Sculpture Reference:http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/kooning-seated-figure-on-a-bench-t03162

Willem De kooning was a Dutch-American draftsman and painter his mainly contribution of art was in abstract expressionism. Willem De kooning was not being restricted by naming movements and I can see some of the clear human figure above mostly of his drawings and paintings.

His paintings of women feature a unique blend of gestural abstraction and figuration. Also some of his works I can see he was heavily inspired or influenced by the Cubism of Picasso,I can hardly understand his painting by those dismembering,re-assembling and distorting his figures in the painting. In this case, this also shows the history of art changing the trend or can I say that there is a very clever way to recording people’s movement in his abstractionism painting. Thus I choose this painting with geometry only using lines and colours blocks in order to create a melancholic impression for me.

What's more, I am looking for sculpture and installation that represent humans' figures in abstract way. I found Willem de Kooning's sculpture very interesting not only the twisted figure but also the making process. His hands were too small to work the clay thus he wore two pairs of gloves in order to work more broadly.

Karel Appel

“Painting, like passion, is an emotion full of truth and rings a living sound, like the roar coming from the lion's breast,” he reflected. “To paint is to destroy what preceded. I never try to make a painting, but a chunk of life.”

Karel Appel,a painter figurative abstractions combined colours and forms. Like Jean Dubuffet, Appel was inspired by the artwork of children and the rejected aesthetic tastes. At the beginning I thought this is abstract painting based on geometry then I found the lines are more soft and additional lines balanced the geometry and lines quite well. I have to point out that the combination of colours caught my eyes when I first saw it.

I found inspiration in his paintings and he captured the figures well from those children painting style. I think this could be relevant to my usage of colours while I need to collect different materials and set up the colour pallet for the theme.

'Distance Preference' Survey

Through this survey research:

  • Proves Hall's theory is right
  • The survey is not wide-ranged for its research aged group is too specific

This is the second task I set for myself in order to form this project with more fact I discovered.

The question I asked to my interviewees was ‘ Different people have different definition of ‘proper distance between individuals’ What’s the comfortable distance for you as a interpersonal distance preference? How do you feel when someone is having short (long) physical distance with you? ’

According to these answers I have collected from my friends. People prefer keeping long distance wether is in a love relationship or other relationship. I think I did not make a good survey because I was only asking to people who are at the same age as me. In China, many middle aged adult think this is indifferent and a bad manner. They did not think about the personal space needed because of their life experience was a lot different with us. What’s more,I want to discover different cultures might have different preference of physical distance thus I interviewed Anna,an Australian she said she was totally fine with far distance as long as they could hear each other clear.

I think this survey in someway proves that Hall’s theory is right and people do feel anxious and angry when the physical distance is too close.
