DECADENCE

LATIN - DE CADERE (to fall away): Decline, decay, and LOOSE OF TRADITIONAL VALUES

- Hedonistc, self indulgent, sexual transgessive, FAILED TO RESPECT SOCIAL NORMS.

"Notion of decadence is inhabited by a doubleness that puts fundamental moral and social values in question"

Decadent style is ARTIFICIAL, ORNAMELTNAL, SUPERFICIAL, DECORATIVE.

A style of decompistion and desintegration.

Vacuum Process

"Vacuum mold casting, also known in manufacturing industry as the V process, employs a sand mold that contains no moisture or binders. The internal cavity of the mold holds the shape of the casting due to forces exerted by the pressure of a vacuum. Vacuum molding is a casting process that was developed in Japan around 1970."

A special pattern is used for the vacuum mold casting process. It is either a match-plate or a cope and drag pattern with tiny holes to enable a vacuum suction. A thin plastic sheet is placed over the casting pattern and the vacuum pressure is turned on, causing the sheet to adhere to the surface of the pattern."

NIGHTWOOD By Djuna Barnes

Reading this book was one of the things that inspired me most for this project, the way she creates an exotic and eccentric world is the most amazing thing to read. It the back of the book it says "it is like drinking a wine with a pearl dissolving in your glass, and this is just right.

"Nightwood has neither stereotypes nor caricatures; there is a truth to these damaged hearts that moves us beyond the negative. Humans suffer and, gay or straight, they break themselves into pieces, blur themselves with drink and drugs, choose the wrong lover, crucify themselves on their own longings and, let's not forget, are crucified by a world that fears the stranger - whether in life or in love."

"In Nightwood, they are all strangers, and they speak to those of us who are always, or just sometimes, the stranger; or to the ones who open the door to find the stranger standing outside"

This quotes are some reviews of the book that explain better than what I can.

GREY GARDENS

WOLFGANG TILLMANS at TATE

What interested me the most about the exhibition and at the same time can relate with my project is :

- His focus on gender definitions and limitations

- The expression of the night culture, and the human beings who participate

- Politic catastrophes going on, that try to divide the world and separate us

- His interest in deteriorated enviroments and materials

Crystallisation process

"Crystallisation is a separation technique that is used to separate a solid that has dissolved in a liquid and made a solution.

The solution is warmed in an open container, allowing the solvent to evaporate, leaving a saturated solution.
A solution that has as much solid dissolved in it as it can possibly contain is called a saturated solution
As the saturated solution is allowed to cool, the solid will come out of the solution and crystals will start to grow.
The crystals can then be collected and allowed to dry.
A solid that does not dissolve in
a liquid can be separated by filtration.

The size of crystals depends on the rate of cooling. Fast cooling will result in a large number of small crystals.
Slow cooling will result in a smaller number of large crystals. See for example basalt and granite rock formations."

Brassaï's photographs contain a strange mixture of seediness and resilience that ultimately triumphs over any false notions of glamour, its a perfect example of decadence in that time.

DEMIMONDE

The term was often used as one of disapprobation, the behavior of a person in the demimonde being contrary to more traditional values. Such behaviors often included drinking or drug use, gambling, high spending, and sexual promiscuity.

RROSE IS A RROSE IS A RROSE

This exhibition that took place at the Guggenheim Museum in New York attests to the way in which demimonde portrait galleries of gay outlaws, flesh cutters, cross dressers, sex workers, S/M communities, class pariahs, drag queens, artist, actors, liberated women, and transgender adventures produce a frisson, a com modifiable buzz. The bourgeois public has always enjoyed a walk on the wild side as long as a safe house awaits at the end. But while the commercial return on a demimonde work of art may be reliable the material contains interpretive pitfalls exceeding the usual problems of censorship and bad press./ Perennial Decay book

"Decadent Movement emerged in France from Symbolismt. The Decadent Movement is characterized by a fin de siécle disquiet that is represented with bizarre visions and a fascination for the grotesque. Words like unwholesomeness, morbidity and perversity were constantly used to describe the works."

" ...the woman is a symbol of destruction and evil. Evil is natural while goodness and virtue have to be created. He writes, "All that is beautiful and noble is the result of reason and calculation. Crime... is natural in its origins."

"The morbid fascination with “ruin porn”—the decrepit or devastated remains of human existence—is hardly a niche interest at this point. People are drawn to the aftermath of destruction or the ravages of time because catastrophe and/or decay is mesmerizing, but many argue that ruin porn is voyeuristic and ghoulish. Well, that’s why we have art, folks—so we can gawk without guilt!." / Dangerous minds website

GREY GARDENS

An old mother and her middle-aged daughter, the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, live their eccentric lives in a filthy, decaying mansion in East Hampton.

Mother and daughter live in a world of their own behind the towering privets that surround their decaying 28-room East Hampton mansion known as "Grey Gardens," a place so far gone that the local authorities once threatened to evict them for violating building and sanitation codes.

NAN GOLDIN

I decided to look at Nan Goldin work since she is one of the main artists who depict this life o people living in the "Fringe" of social norms. I think its really  interesting to see the kind of fabrics and clothing that her friends were using since make use of the mix of cheap and decayed clothing with bulky and dramatic costumes. Also the idea of using charity shop kind of clothing, making a contrast between who would be supposed to use that garments and who is actually using it, let say a young girl doing drugs using a grandmother typical dress is beautiful for me.

I was really inspired with this idea since the majority of people would see this as a "Freak" there is no reason to be that way. Or even clearer what is to be a freak?

Also I like how crafty and artisanal are the experimentations he does with fabric and I am interested in doing the same with my samples

RUSTING PROCESS

"Rust is the process of iron (molecules) oxidising into iron oxide, or rust. Rust is the common name for a very common compound, iron oxide. Iron (or steel) rusting is an example of corrosion, an electrochemical process involving an anode, an electrolyte and a cathode . When metal corrodes, the electrolyte helps provide oxygen to the anode. As oxygen combines with the metal, electrons are liberated. When they flow through the electrolyte to the cathode, the metal of the anode disappears, swept away by the electrical flow or converted into rust."

Decadent interiors

I find it as an exiting challenge include the "decadent" interiors into my research and make something that can be tacky into something that is beautiful at least in my eyes, also I think the use of curtains is an excellent material to drape although its kind of cliche would be also a challenge to do it in a new way

Leonor Fini

I think the idea of using Leonor Fini came at the beginning from the character she presents in her times as an eccentric woman who does painting and how she depicts the sexuality of women in a open way, not sexualising their bodies but on the contrary showing them as self that can seduce and be the protagonists of their own story and painting and not as something that is being observed by a man
