Filip Custic

212 for Fucking Young

I feel extremely fascinated about the non-human and futuristic elements in Custic's photographs. The skin of the models is edited to be so smooth and fake, almost like robots or some kinds of non-human creatures. I find this visually eccentric. I think the non-human element and monstrosity will fit well with my final photoshoots and the concept of eccentricity. I will distort the body form and play around with the skin colour and texture. This will make my final photos much stronger and delivers the concept and mood of eccentricity better.

Primary Research- Ear Wax

Screen Shot 2018-09-02 at 16.26.06.png

Photographing ear wax is one of the eccentric behaviours from the list. I tried this myself, I took photographed ear wax with flash, which is absolutely extreme, showing the ear hair, wax and blood streak. I think it can be easily developed into print designs. I also found the similarities of ear wax and food grease, which is the first peculiarity I explored in this project. I will combine the two things and play around with them.

Primary Research- Bread Smashing on Face

0.jpg.1

Smashing food with face is one of the eccentric behaviours from the list. The shape of bread combining with face is quite amazing and quirky, it's like if the bread is merging into the human. The stack of bread looks visually strong, the layers and texture are very interesting. I will experiment with these ideas in different ways, such as casting, fabric manipulation etc.

Primary Research- Food Mixing

Screen Shot 2018-09-02 at 16.22.18.png

The mixing of food is one of the eccentric behaviours from the list. The person said that mixing food together makes him feel satisfied because of the greasy texture, disgusting look and also the greasy sound made when mixing. I really like the greasy and disgusting texture, which can be developed into different prints, material samples and textiles, using different materials like wax, latex, silicon and resin.

White Chapel Gallery- Katja Novitskova

Screen Shot 2018-07-30 at 11.23.38.png

Katja Novitskova- Invasion Curves

I went to this exhibition in White Chapel Gallery. I am extremely fascinated and attracted by the combination and mixture of monstrosity and machinery elements in Novitskova's works. The use of metal and plastic structures are absolutely eccentric, almost bringing an uncomfortable mood to the audiences. The prints of unknown creatures on transparent acrylic also creates a strong visual impact. I feel very inspired by Novitskova, the aesthetic is similar to what I am going to create in this project.

Crampons

Screen Shot 2018-09-02 at 17.16.54.png

The long nail idea makes me think of crampons because of the similar sharp and pointy element. The shape and form of crampons can be taken into garment. I will create some collages incorporating the idea of crampons and see how it works. I think the crampon elements can also be interesting to be developed into detail designs and fastenings. Or it can be developed into an extra accessary that go along with the garment

Weird Inventions

Screen Shot 2018-08-13 at 14.11.33.png

These inventions in daily life are fun and humorous, which fascinates me a lot.  The construction, design purpose, shapes, objects and use of materials are extremely fascinating and interesting to me. I will take inspiration from them and create some constructions, like hardware and machinery and apply them into the garment.

Fashion Design- Maison Margiela

Screen Shot 2018-07-30 at 12.08.09.png

Maison Margiela Fall Haute Couture 2018

In this collection, the construction of phone holder and eyewear applied on to the body create a strong visual impact. I am very excited by the weird combination of hard material, machinery structure and human body. I want to apply this idea of machinery structure and hard material into my project.

Lee Lin Chin- News Announcer

Screen Shot 2018-07-30 at 11.37.57.png

Lee Lin Chin is a news reporter. I am particularly drawn towards her interesting and fashionable outfits when she is presented to announce reports and news. It is quite different and unique to wear like this doing this kind of job. It's quite interesting how "eccentricity" is defined. The same thing applied to different people might be seen differently because of the given definition to a certain group of people. Reporters are seen to be in boring and strict suits, rather than the colourful and fashionable garments.

Fashion Design- Chromosome Residence

Screen Shot 2018-07-30 at 11.30.45.png

Chromosome Residence

Chromosome Residence by Paty Abrahamsson, his designs are absolutely bizarre and exciting. He plays with fashion and aesthetics, creating weird combinations of design and use of materials. There's a lot of visual tricks applied into his designs, such as the image above. Garment can be worn in different ways, creating weird structures and concepts. The garment is seen from a certain angle, which creates a totally different, quirky and interesting effect. Perspectives, angles and ways of wearing garments are something I would like to explore further in this project.

Tenderpixel Gallery- Becoming Plants

Screen Shot 2018-07-30 at 11.13.48.png

Julia Crabtree & William Evans

In this series of work, I am fascinated about the use of material and form. The hard material of glass in a melted form, creating a weird and contrasting visual impact. I will experiment with hard materials, like acrylic, which I have easy access to. Incorporating hard materials into garments create, they have a very different tactile and feeling comparing with the soft fabric, which creates an interesting contrast.

Live- Eating Blogger

Live- Eating Blogger

There's a bit trend of eating blogger, which they makes videos of eating unbelievably big quantity of food. It's amazing and eccentric how they can eat so much. I found a lot of the moments very interesting when the bloggers are eating, the gestures and the image of food going through the mouth. I can take inspirations from these images and create 3d forms on body. Imagining a huge form growing towards the mouth or coming out of the mouth, linking with the rest of the garment.

Rumour- Brando refusing to wear trousers

Screen Shot 2018-07-30 at 10.50.48.png

Although this is just a rumour, it's quite eccentric and interesting. The rumour of Brando refusing to wear trousers gave me a lot of visual ideas, exposing, nudes, transvestite and so on. I might take this idea as one of the elements in my design, imagining a big garment covering tightly the entire body with only the lower body exposed, which I think is visually impactful and interesting.

Book- Applin J. (2012) Rethinking Sculptures in 1960s America

Applin J. (2012) Rethinking Sculptures in 1960s America

Things to be considered taken into my project

  • Interesting use of material working with subsided shape and forms
  • Exaggerated enlarged scale
  • Original subject matter being destroyed and distorted

Amazing Interior- Pink House

Screen Shot 2018-07-24 at 12.35.16.png

Pink House

Amazing Interior- Netflix

This house is filled with entire pink, literally everything painted in pink. The owner's obsession with pink is quite unbelievable and amazing. I found this is something very eccentric and interesting. This makes me think about the use of colour in my own project, which I believe colour would be a significant element. I'm thinking if the entire garment in the same colour would be visually effective and impactful, which is something I will need to explore and find out about.

  • quirky elements and designs found in daily life

Film- Dream

WechatIMG3961532598962_.pic_hd.jpg

Dream

Directed by Akira Kurosawa

One word to describe this film "Dream" is eccentric. From photography, editing, colours, sound, music, dialogue and content, they all give me a feeling of quirkiness, hard to understand and weird. Particularly the scene above, the colours and big amount of characters create strong visual impacts.

One of the most significant element of film is the narrative, which I think it would be interesting to bring narrative to the garment. I might create a story of an eccentric person, which will travel through the garment.

Yayoi Kusama

hpfhp9.jpg

Yayoi Kusama

Image from http://yayoi-kusama.jp/e/information/

Yayoi Kusama's famous element of dots, which endlessly showing in all her works. The maxmalism and repetition inspired me, which I think they create strong impact to the audiences. I'm thinking about taking one element from my project and make the most out of it, repeating it, using it in different medias, 3d form, textiles, fabrics, prints, sculptures etc.

Novel- Paradaise Lost

WechatIMG3821532351039_.pic_hd.jpg

Shileyuan (Paradise Lost) 2005

Author: Junichi Watanabe

This novel talks about the very extreme love between two married men and women. They wanted their love between each other never fade and forever stay at the highest peak, in order to achieve this, they commited to suicide together when having sex.

I am amazed by their extreme relationship, which they are both unbelievably obsessed with each other. This is eccentric, making me think of explore with the eccentric parts of psychology and relationship between people.

Chris Maggio

Maggio's photos are fun, humorous and quirky. The non-human elements are something I want to have in my final photoshoot. The re-altered nose and ears and green skin is absolutely amazing.

Extreme Long Nails

WechatIMG4781535902643_.pic_hd.jpg

In some countries' culture, such as India and Vietnam, people used to keep their nails extremely long. The shape of long and pointy nails growing out of the hands is quite quirky and eccentric. I would like to experiment with this using some hard materials, like plastic and metal, which creates a totally different tactile to fabric.

Smashing Bread with Face

Screen Shot 2018-09-02 at 16.20.13.png

This Instagram blogger has her entire page with almost two hundred videos of smashing bread with face. This is quite eccentric and extreme. I think it'll be interesting to create a abstract and quirky form on top of the face inspired by this eccentric behaviour.

Primary Research Interview- Eccentric Habits and Hobbie

WechatIMG4061532944391_.pic.jpg

I did interview with people about their eccentric habits and hobbies as I believe almost everyone has got some personal weird habits that they don't realise. I interviewed them and asked different questions to give them some hints. I ended up to get some interesting answers. One person said "milk and tea before or after masturbating to keep calm", which is something very personal. And I also find it quite interesting. It gives me some visual ideas straight away. Inspired by the book of "Gadget Nation", weird constructions and combination can be applied to this person's eccentric habit. Milk and tea, hands and penis are the three things that involve in this eccentric activity, creating a structure with these three things is quite interesting. They are things that don't relate to each other, which would be fun and humorous to create some connections between them.

Gadget Nation- A Journey Through The Eccentric World of Invention

Authur: Collins M.

This book includes a large collection of all sorts of inventions designed for solving small daily issues. They are absolutely fun and humorous. The design purposes are solving very small daily inconveniences and problems. A lot of the construction, design purpose, shapes, colours are extremely fascinating and interesting to me. By reading this book, there are a lot of elements I can take from. I think the thinking of these inventors might influence the way my project forms.

Artist- Luke Liberia Moore

Luke Liberia Moore

Entropic Fantasia 2016-Ongoing

I feel fascinated about the combination of natural and machinery elements. The material utilisation in Luke Liberia Moore's work is very interesting and rich. The richness of texture is created by different natural materials, like onions and wheatgrass, casting surfaces in metal and plaster. I would like to cast the bread, which is something that's got a lot of details and texture.

Fashion Design- MEN(Y)ELEK

MEN(Y)ELEK FW 18-19

Wired combination and mixture of unrelated and contrasting elements

  • knitted sweater and plastic bags
  • skiing shoes and high heels

The combinations fascinates me. I feel really attracted to the wired mixture of unrelated and contrasting elements. I'm working towards having a lot of different and diverse elements in my project inspired by the three chosen peculiarities from the list. My goal is to create a garment with a wild mixture of quirky elements.

Maisie Cousins

Screen Shot 2018-09-02 at 17.19.27.png

Maisie Cousins

"Rubbish Bin"

  • greasy texture
  • interesting relationship between flower and food
  • rich colours

How I can take them into my project

  • surface materials, wax, plastic, latex, resin
  • print designs

Fashion Design- Marie Adma-Leenaerdt

Screen Shot 2018-09-02 at 17.18.28.png

Marie Adma-Leenaerdt Collection: "Grey Area"

The designer disrupted the common standard of silhouettes of garments, turning the entire skirt up-side-down. The quirkiness and eccentricity is created in the garments. In this project, I'm working on creating wild silhouettes that doesn't go along with common garment shapes.

Fashion Design- Sinéad O'Dwyer

Screen Shot 2018-07-30 at 12.13.13.png

Sinéad O'Dwyer RCA Graduate Collection 2018

The casting of body creates an interesting combination with fabrics and human body. The slightly transparency create a rich texture in the design. Casting is a technique I am very interested in that I would like to try in this project. It's interesting to recreate an existing object in another tone, texture and material.

Fashion Design- Comme des Garçons

Screen Shot 2018-07-30 at 12.19.33.pngComme des Garçons Homme Plus Spring 2019 Menswear

This latest collection by Comme des Garçons, the use of bright colours and textures play very important roles in this collection creating some visually attractive and impactful effects. The gathering textures makes the whole look richer and also creates the shape and form in the garment. In this project, I will play with texture, textiles and materials first, then apply them onto the body to create forms and shapes.

Sylwana Zybura

Interesting shapes of construction.

Weird combination of hardware and human form, futuristic elements.

Texture of latex sticking and holding onto human body.

David Brandon Geeting

David Brandon Geeting

David Brandon Geeting's photography gives me a lot of idea about prints, texture, pattern and colours. I love the richness of colour and textures going on in his work, which is something i will experiment in my project, using multi media, such as latex, silicon, wax, plaster, resin and so on.

Fashion Design- Matteo Carlomusto

Tenderpixel Gallery- Becoming Plants

The Anthropophagous Stage by Paloma Proudfoot

I am fascinated about the wired combination of blueberries and glass. Especially when they are in same colour but very different tactile, which creates a very subtle but strong impact. Material experimentation will be a big part in this project as I believe this is a big element that can change the entire aesthetic and atmosphere delivered through the outcome.

Tate Modern- Joan Jonas

Screen Shot 2018-07-30 at 11.08.42.png

My New Theatre III- In the Shadow a Shadow 1999

Nude bodies are seen very often in Joan Jonas's works. In this video with a dog and a nude woman, they are both naked. This makes me question myself why human naked in public areas is considered as inappropriate, but not animals. Eccentricity is a very blurred term, the definition changes throughout the history in different cultural and ethical contexts.

Tate Modern- Joan Jonas

ASMR- Eating Sound

ASMR- Eating Sound

ASMR is a popular trend in these days. I found the videos of eating and chewing sound absolutely amazing.  I am amazed by the huge sound created by chewing food. And a lot of people loves listening to ASMR, which can be considered a bit eccentric. I might create a garment with sound and video of ASMR incorporated. This is something I've never done before, bringing 4d media into garments. There are different ways I've thought of, e.g. a physical screen incorporated, projection onto white space on garment.

Amazing Interior- House for 22 Cats

Screen Shot 2018-07-24 at 12.31.43.png

Amazing Interior- Netflix

This man purposely designed an entire house for his 22 cats, which is absolutely eccentric. The constructions of tunnels, stairs and all details are all considered thoughtfully for his cats. The cats can travel from the bottom of the house to the top in literally 3 seconds. I found this quite unique, which I think the constructions can be interesting elements taken into my design.

Film- Max Mon Amour

WechatIMG395.jpeg

Max, Mon Amour

Directed by Nagisa Ôshima

The film is about the uncommon and subtle relationship between human and animal. I'm amazed by the way human and animal live and communicate with each other. The eccentricity in psychology is very complicated, but interesting. I might research more into the eccentricity in a spiritual and psychological aspect.

Grayson Perry

Grayson-Perry.jpg

Grayson Perry

Grayson Perry's obsession with colourful and blooming dresses and outfits, they look absolutely fascinating to me. I like the playfulness, high saturated colour contrasts and funny patterns. This is mad.

I want to develop colourful print designs for my garment, referencing and influencing from my research of eccentricity list. I'm planning to have print as a significant part in this project.
