Title of the work: Konstantin Grcic's Design For Magis: Chair One Public Seating System 2

Date: 2006

Konstantin Grcic uses architecture elements into his furniture designs and in this piece of public seating design, the form of the chairs combined triangle forms by using straight metal stripes. The design of the product is very futuristic but it is also very functional chair. 

The way of combining architecture design and furniture design together seems easy to do but the outcome is very strong. I think sometimes maybe simply combining some elements from other fields will develop the design further.

Those desk lamps have simple forms and functions just like normal lamps but they are unique and unforgettable. It is not because of the applications of colors on the components or the details of the holders. The designer just combined those simple elements together. 

I suppose that skills and techniques are not essential in designs, thinking less may leads to a better outcome.

Both of the photos were taken in Iceland. The figure in the left picture is my mother wearing knitwear designed by 'QIAN QIU'. The right photo was my sister wearing knitwear from 'QIAN QIU'. 

As my family all love knitwear so much, I was influenced by them a lot as well. It is one of the reasons that I am working towards to textile design now.

'QIAN QIU' is a knitwear brand based in China and it has a simple style of design. The company was registered in 1999 and the brand was established in 2000, the year I was born. My parents, Haisong Gao (father) and Hanzhen Dai (Mother), own the company and the brand and therefore, since I was a child, I was influenced by fashion design and especially knitwear.

Virginia Dragon-Richardson used textile design ideas into architecture design. This piece represents how the wall of the building could be designed to look like. I really like the idea of using textile ideas into other fields other than on the body. By simply applying some colors on the the bricks, the building became totally different. 

It is very easy to show the idea by simply draw onto a printed photo or digitally using Photoshop to create some layers on top of the original photo

Lee Ufan used the same brush, the same color of paint and the same direction of brush strokes in this piece of work. It is interesting how he used such a simple repeated action and create this specific piece with the mood of tension and sensation, presence and absence

I think I could develop my own piece that represent my specific emotion of a specific moment. Sometimes, simplicity contains more then complexity. Less is more

The woman in the video is the one who cooked mainly. The way she is dressing is very suitable for cooking this specific kind of food that there are gloves on her hands, tool holding by her fingers, apron on her body and cover-chief on her head. Her cover-chief is very traditional Turkish that I do not see the pattern normally.

I went to the place for a second time visit. This time, I brought some products from the supermarket and noticed the the keyboard of the cash register is a smaller version of the overall arrangement of the supermarket, organized but irregular at the same time.

Title of the work: Precious Pricetag Pins

Date: 2016

The jewellery designer Lucie Davis hand made those unique pins using simple materials like laser-engraved, enamel and silver-plated tie-tac pin. For this project, she was inspired by those price tags of products sold in shops. She likes to work with little details from everyday life and present them in a magic way. Lucie’s created pieces seem light-hearted but with the owners or the holders of those pieces, it is all about interaction, interpretation and the communication if human beings.

I think what the way Lucie Davis is using daily life elements into her works are very important in art and design curriculum. Inspiration does not have to be special but in depth. Looking through the surface of what is appearing and thinking about what is been telling behind the scene is what I am aiming for, which Lucie worked on the similar idea as well. 

As Lucie’s works have a realistic style, her pieces are just like what those objects look like in real life. What I want to try is making my art piece to have a more hidden viewpoint. This means to have more information contained in one piece and the viewers or audiences should have their own understanding looking at my work. I like the way she did not make such complex structures and I will try to do some straight observe from life as well.

I really like the organization the cafeteria did to all the food, a slightly different on every single one but basically the same for each one. I feel like if I would copy one of the shape and repeat it for a few times, a similar effect will be given. Therefore, this picture really inspires me of making prints out of those regular shapes.

Although there are all those different things needed to be placed out on the shelf, it is not uncomfortable for customers to look at the shelf. On the other hand, it is even better to show to customers that the cafeteria is being ordered and not hiding anything away. For example, you can see how your food is been going to your hand that every step of taking it out the basin, putting into a take away box or in a clean plate and passing to your hand. I felt safe and trustable to sit and eat in the place. 

6.15 YILDIZ SUPERMARKET - PRIMARY PHOTOS [SECTION TWO]

 It is a photo I took from the outside of the shop window. All the signs that are sticked on the window are made from different places and they all have different sizes, shapes and even been made from very different time periods that some are very old and the others seem much newer. In addition, some of the signs are sticked on the outside of the window while there are few sticked from the inside. 

It is very interesting to me that all those printed fonts, signs and papers are allocated together in a harmonious and comfortable way. Each individual sign is designed to be serious and formal but when they all come together in this way, they give less pressure to customers, which is very suitable for a small supermarket like this.

The supermarket places all of the storages on top of each shelf. Those large large storage boxes are placed next to each other and those boxes that contains the same products are overlapping on top of each other. It is very convenient to find a specific product with this kind of organization. Although it seems very dangerous where they are just simply placed there up to the ceiling that if something in the middle falls, the whole pile will be destroyed. 

6.12 PRIMARY PHOTOS

These photos were taken through the windows of the Central Saint Martins Archway building's window. I asked someone to take these photos for me because I could not take them by myself. The figure in the photos is myself and I planed the perspectives and the scenes in order to show the scared feeling through the photos. I think the idea of taking the photos through so many layers of windows is successful that the figure is not in a dominate position and the surroundings are taking more places. This is just like how people feel their unconfident that they are not being eye-catching or even being noticed.  

In addition, I found that with a different condition of lightning, a huge difference appears between the photos. I think I will explore about the lightning more in my experiments and later on adjustments.

These two photos were taken through the door window. I was standing on the other side of the door and the photos were taken from the inside. This creates the effect of me trying to get through the door and get to the room. I think these photos reflect to the narrative of me entering the entrance of Foundation Plus. The stressed fingers represent my nervousness of having a new starting point.

Here, I explored the different distances of view points to the subject, by having different scale of the scene, the focusing points of the photos changes as well. I noticed that having a set of two photos together tells a story and the order of the photos are important as well. By having the large scene first and then a detailed photos of hand represent that by pushing this specific door, the person feels stress. If the order is the other way round, then it is about a person being nervous outside this door.

I really like the material using in this design that when different materials come together on one bag, the contrast of the characters of each material created an uncommon but harmonious relationship. Also, as the shape of the bag comes from the folding technique, the bag is very structured and volumed, which I think is very functional that it is more stable and substantial.

I think I should break out from the traditional forms of textiles and being inventive and creative. Textiles could be solids, liquids and everything. The edges and boundaries of something is always more interesting than what is in there.

Title of the work: Lisbon's Urban Environment: Organized Control VS. The Unexpected

Date: 2016

From a series of research photos of colorful buildings, Sally Cheung developed a series of textile ideas. By combining traditional printing methods with modern laser cutting techniques together, she created these textile designs. 

I think combining techniques together is a really important skill for a textile designer that using only one method to make textiles is very boring and has limited possibility. In addition, changing the existing patterns, forms or shapes by enlarging, reducing, repeating, transforming and reforming will give more inspirations and create new ideas of design as well.

Title of the work: Composition Avec Rouge

Date: 1921

Piet Mondrian used geometrical color blocks in all of his works. Those blocks of colors combined together in different arrangements and the pieces all look different but the same in a way. 

I could use the same method but in different forms to create my abstract piece. Other then using paints, I could use fabric pieces. The sewing seams would create a similar effect as the thick black lines that split the color blocks.

The ingredients for Turkish baklava recipe:
  • 1.1 lbs (500g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1.2 cups water
  • 200 g (2 sticks) butter
  • 200 g (7 oz) walnuts

To roll the filo dough:

  • 300 g (10 oz) wheat starch

For the syrup:

  • 4 cup sugar

  • 2 tbs lemon juice

I took this video while the chef was packing the food I brought from them. Everything they are doing is so natural and dilatory. The two workers are very tacit as they worked together for a long time. Both of them came from Turkey and speak Turkish to each other as well. I enjoyed the atomsphere in the cafeteria and all the little noises the special cooker made while it is cooking.

The different containers in the cafeteria is a thing I noticed when I visited the place for the second time. There are cups made from different materials including plastic, glass and pottery. Also, all the containers are in different forms like cups, pots, jars and plates. I am fascinating about all those containers in different forms. When some overlaps, they create repeated patterns and some others create irregular patterns.

I really like the package of the cafeteria that they use a special made box to put their Turkish dessert inside. The outside of the box was made by card paper with traditional Turkish print pattern on top and the inner sider was covered by a layer of reflective material that does not absorb oil. Therefore, the box holds the Turkish dessert well because the dessert is very oily, any other normal packages will end up in oil osmosis to the outside. I feel like the package design is very smart and I really like the package box that has printed pattern on one side and a reflective material on the other side.

I brought some food from the cafeteria and they made the food in front of me. It is really good-value food that the price is low and the food is vey tasty and fullness. I think the cook marks on the surface of food is interesting as well. The circular marks are in different sizes and are allocated randomly on the surface.

Title of the work: Kill The Pain

Date: November, 2015

Stacey Huang is a jewellery designer with a background in graphic design. Her work pieces are very creative in design but not exaggerate or fancy. Stacey likes to use reflective and shinny materials like metals and diamonds. Two of her projects that inspired by Tesco and Anadin Extra really interested me.

Both of the projects were inspired by her daily life. It is very important skill to learn about how daily life could inspire a piece of art or design. An object that everyone has or sees every day could be not so impressive or obscure but it is very precious for artists and designers to observe these small pieces of details and develop it further and reflect to a larger topic or a deeper sense of meaning. 

For me, the given place is a supermarket and a cafeteria, which are always appear in my daily life. And the key point for this project is to find some assets of the places and enlarge them. I wanted to find the special elements of those two specific shops, just like how Stacy Huang found her interests in pain killer and Tesco sells.

From the Yildiz Cafeteria, I took this photo in front of the display cabinet where they present all of there selling desserts inside. Those bakeries are placed in the iron basins classified by shapes and flavors. All the basins are exactly the same and all the bakeries are having similar golden color which looks like they are very tasty. They way they present them is very neat and clean, which is a very important element to a food seller.

I noticed that all the prices of food sold in this cafeteria were hand written. This means that the owner could change the prices any time as they want. I think it is only small shops do this as all the large stores have steady price labels. By reading at those hand written letters and numbers, I feel it is very kind and friendly because it is not like how printed labels that have same fonts and everything. It is unique for every single hand written label that I can even think about the time when someone is writing it one by one. 

6.15 YILDIZ SUPERMARKET - PRIMARY PHOTOS [SECTION ONE]

This is a photo I took in front of the Yildiz Supermarket. The place is quite small but full of stuffs. For example, there are shelves from the inside of the supermarket extending to the outside front area and fruits and vegetables layering on top of each other filling all the empty spaces from the top to bottom. It is very organized how the same kinds of fruits are placing on the same box and those boxed are allocated in a regular order. However, it is also very messy at the same time that the boxes are all different to one other and the colors of fruits are ordered randomly. Therefore, the picture shows all those saturated color blocks that taking all the space. 

I am interested in the colors of the fruits, the different colors between the different kinds of fruits, the different tones of color that each individual piece of fruit has and how those colors eventually make blocks in an abstract way.

This is a closer view of vegetables that have similar colors but different shapes. It seems to be very organized how all the same color vegetables have been placing next to each other but it is also very irregular that all those shapes make the whole scene seems unrepeatable.

These are the selfies I took outside building with natural lights. I was taking the photos by placing the phone under my eye level and shooting by the angel where no obvious background is showing. The feeling that I was trying to show through these photos are complex. It is about my unconfident of my appearance and being scared of other people's judgment. I curled up my body to show the lack of self confidence and the fear of facing comments.

I used a set of three cropped photos to tell my feeling a little bit more. These photos were taken in different places and I cropped the original photos into rectangular stripes to avoid any other elements in the photos disturbing viewers. In addition, from the top photo where I was showing my whole face and looking into the camera with a very cold eye contact, I am being cold to protect myself from the judgement others are going to give. And in the middle photo, only part of my face that I am not confident with is showing, this is about showing my weakness to people. The bottom photo is me hiding under tables and not looking at camera. I think it tells the my decadent inside world.
